They went to Gethsemane together with the closest companions. Silently, they walked through the garden towards the hill were they saw people gathered.

“We’re all here, and we’re ready,” Peter greeted them in his booming voice and presented his zealots with pride.

Mariam opened her eyes wider as she saw the large group behind him. The moonlight flickered in shining blades, and the faces she saw underneath the turbans and shawls had not been present at the magical moment an hour earlier. These good men were dedicated and there were hundreds of them. They were dedicated to a cause their great grandfathers had been burning for. This was a group of strong, well trained men proud to be here tonight. The fire of their ancestors was a glowing ember in their eyes.

They have their own inner gold, thought Mariam. The refiner’s fire doesn’t take the same form in everybody. She silently admired them, and wished them success with all her heart. Her mind struggled to push away the visions of a different fire, consuming, eating.

Yeshua stood with the leaders and spoke quietly. Mariam kept a distance and stayed with Lazarus between the trees when she felt the earth trembling. She knew this was not an earthquake.

She saw them coming through the gates of the garden, marching in formation. Mariam gasped at the sheer number and held onto her brother.

“How many do they need to send? Are they expecting a battle?”

“It seems so. How many hundreds of men can you count? I hope Judas has done what he was asked. Otherwise there will be massive bloodshed.”

“Are the sicarii here too?”

“As many as they could gather.”

“May the Gods protect us all.”

A lonely man in blue robes walked in front of the high priests and the centurion leading his cohort. The Roman official only needed to wave his hand, and his hundreds of men would have fallen upon their people. But he followed Judas. All he wanted was the leader. Then he trusted that these ruffians would all disperse and disappear.

Never underestimate people who have been burning inside for more generations than you can count, Mariam thought.

Centurion, do you know who your great grandfather was? You’re probably a Roman mutt with a blood relative from every country of the Roman Empire. You don’t know anything about these people. Their hatred for you has been burning for all the three hundred years of the rule of the Eagle. It has followed the same blood, the same cinnamon skin, the identical arrangement of the turban above dark brown eyes with the same ember glowing. They’ll be back. And the same burning ember will be born again and again, burning with a patriotism for their country you know nothing about.

Mariam watched the centurion shift his feet uneasily as his cells received the message she sent him. He nervously waited for Judas to show him who was their leader. Judas met the eyes of Yeshua and they shared an understanding. He walked up to his friend and kissed his master farewell.
